How does dynamic weighing of hanging load in motion work?

Written by Intermercato · Published · 3 min read

Dynamic weighing calculates the weight of a hanging load while it moves – no stop, no settling time. Intermercato Intelligent Weighing Systems do it with a patented algorithm inside the crane scale: the scale calculates a stable weight during the lift, signals the operator to unload, and saves the weight automatically.

World leading in dynamic weighing of hanging load. That is how Intermercato puts it. Here is what it means on the machine.

Static versus dynamic weighing of hanging loads

A hanging load is never truly still. On a material handler, the grab swings as the boom slews. It accelerates on the way up and brakes on the way over. Scrap shifts inside the grab. Every one of those movements adds or removes force on the load cell.

How intelligent weighing works, step by step

  1. Activate. The weighing starts automatically or manually, depending on the weighing mode.
  2. Lift. The operator lifts and slews as normal. The load cell measures continuously.
  3. Calculate. Intermercato’s unique algorithm calculates the weight from the moving signal.
  4. Signal. When a stable weight has been calculated, the operator receives a signal to unload.
  5. Save. On unloading, the weight is saved automatically in one of the app’s memory banks – tagged with material, collection point and, if you want, GPS position.

That is what Intermercato means by intelligent weighing: the scale takes over the weighing process, so the operator can keep the machine moving.

Built for real conditions

At CRONIMET NORR AB in Kalix, scrap shifts during lifting. Intermercato’s dedicated weighing technology quickly stabilises the measurement and delivers accurate results under real working conditions. The yard is small, so not having to reposition or drive to the weighbridge makes a real difference.

The hardware is built to match:

  • Overload-protected and temperature-compensated load cell – cold mornings and hot afternoons, same scale.
  • Handles up to 3x rated capacity in overload while keeping its accuracy.
  • Extremely low-built design – minimal loss of lifting height.
  • Wireless – no extra cables between the scale and the cab.
  • No maintenance.

Three weighing modes

The Intermercato Weighing App for Android supports:

  • Automatic weighing – the scale activates and handles the weighing cycle.
  • Semi-automatic weighing – the weighing is activated manually by the operator.
  • Container weighing – for containers, with gross and net weights.

All modes give gross and net weights.

At Hafen Wien, the operator also tares directly from the cab when changing attachments, so one scale works with grabs, a Big Bag spreader and a load hook.

Why it matters: certified dynamic weighing

Weighing in motion is only half the story. The other half is whether you can trade on the weight. Intermercato’s system is certified and type-approved according to MID for hanging load in motion and meets Swedac’s requirements. Read what certified, type-approved weighing means.

How accurate is it?

Intermercato states that its patented technology makes the weighing accuracy superior and independent of driver and driving style. The exact accuracy of a certified system is defined by its type approval. See How accurate is a material handler scale?

Frequently asked questions

What is dynamic weighing?

Dynamic weighing is weighing a load while it is in motion. On a crane or material handler it means the weight is calculated during the lift, without stopping the boom. Intermercato calls this intelligent weighing.

Does the operator have to stop the boom to weigh?

No. With Intermercato Intelligent Weighing Systems the scale takes over the weighing as soon as it is activated and calculates the weight while the load moves. The operator gets a signal to unload when a stable weight is ready.

Does driving style affect the weight?

Intermercato states that its patented technology makes the weighing accuracy independent of driving style and operator. The algorithm is designed for real working conditions, including scrap that shifts during the lift.

Where is the weight stored?

The weight is saved automatically in one of the memory banks of the Intermercato Weighing App for Android, and can be exported to CSV or PDF or synced to Intermercato Cloud.
