Material handler scale vs weighbridge and static scales: which do you need?

Written by Intermercato · Published · 4 min read

A weighbridge tells you what the truck weighed. A material handler scale tells you what you are loading – grab by grab, while you load. For scrap yards, ports and cargo handlers, Intermercato’s MH 15-50 brings the weight into the lift: certified and type-approved for hanging load in motion, so you can load to the limit, avoid overload and skip the extra trips.

Right tool for the right task. Here is how to decide.

When a material handler scale wins

Loading trucks and containers. You know the weight while you build the load. Load the maximum amount of material and avoid overloading – before the truck leaves.

Small or busy yards. At CRONIMET NORR AB in Kalix, limited space makes every movement count. Intermercato’s wireless weighing system on a Fuchs MHL340 lets operators weigh scrap during loading, optimising every truck load without unnecessary repositioning or repeated trips to the weighbridge.

Multi-tool machines. At Hafen Wien, one MH25 in front of the quick coupler on a Fuchs MHL380F weighs with orange-peel grabs, loading grabs, a Big Bag spreader and a load hook. One weighing system, multiple attachments.

Ships, barges and bulk. The MH scale is used when loading and unloading ships, where a weighbridge is not part of the flow.

When you still want a weighbridge

A material handler scale weighs what the machine lifts. A weighbridge weighs what drives in. If you receive material on trucks you do not load yourself, or customers require a vehicle weight, a weighbridge still has a role. Many yards use both: the weighbridge at the gate, the material handler scale on the loading side.

The motion problem – and why it matters for the comparison

Older crane scales needed the load to hang still, which made them slower than they should be. Intermercato’s patented algorithm calculates the weight while the load is in motion and, according to Intermercato, independent of driving style and operator. That is what makes in-lift weighing practical at production speed. More: How dynamic weighing works.

The usual argument for the weighbridge is that its weight counts. Intermercato’s system is certified and type-approved according to MID for hanging load in motion and meets Swedac’s requirements, with verification and recurring inspections together with RISE. Read what type approval means.

Data: one total versus every grab

A weighbridge gives you one number per vehicle. The Intermercato Weighing App stores every weight in memory banks named by material or collection point, exports to CSV and PDF, adds GPS position and syncs to Intermercato Cloud with API integration. That is traceability per material, not just per truck. More: Weighing software and Intermercato Cloud.

How to decide

  1. Do you load the trucks yourself? Then a material handler scale saves the most.
  2. Do you invoice on the loaded weight? Choose a certified, type-approved scale for hanging load in motion.
  3. Do you change attachments often? Mount the scale in front of the quick coupler.
  4. Do you receive material you do not load? Keep a weighbridge at the gate for that flow.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a weighbridge and a material handler scale?

A weighbridge weighs a vehicle and its load as a whole, usually after loading. A material handler scale weighs each grab during the lift, so you know the load while you build it. Intermercato's MH 15-50 does this in motion.

Can a material handler scale replace a weighbridge?

For many loading tasks it removes the need to drive to the weighbridge to check or adjust a load. Because Intermercato's system is certified and type-approved under MID, the weight from the lift can also be used for trade. Whether you still need a weighbridge depends on what else you weigh and your customers' requirements.

Is a material handler scale better than a static platform scale?

They solve different problems. A static platform scale weighs material placed on it, which adds a handling step. A material handler scale weighs during the lift you already make, with no extra step.

Why do scrap yards use crane scales on material handlers?

To optimise every truck load without repositioning or repeated trips to the weighbridge. That was the result at CRONIMET NORR AB in Kalix with an Intermercato scale on a Fuchs MHL340.
